Muslim ex-Ministers resumption of portfolios

Each political party to decide

Muslim ex-Ministers representing different political parties met yesterday and agreed to give authority to their respective party leaders to take a decision on their taking up Ministerial portfolios in the government again. Yesterday’s meeting was held to decide whether they should resume ministerial duties after they had earlier collectively resigned their posts on June 3 in what they said was a protest against the hostile targeting of the Muslim community after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

The ex-Ministers arrived at this latest decision after having extensive discussions under the patronage of Parliamentarian A.H.M. Fowzie at the Parliamentary complex yesterday.

Accordingly, former Ministers Kabir Hashim and Abdul Haleem have been given permission to discuss with their party leader, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and take a decision on accepting Ministerial portfolios again.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress politburo is also expected to meet this evening and decide on accepting the ministerial portfolios.

Sources said that the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, led by ex-Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, will meet tomorrow (Thursday) to take a decision in this regard.
