HASL holds workshop for 30 SCC heads

A workshop to educate the heads of 30 Senior Citizens' Committees (SCCs) in the Colombo Divisional Secretariat on advocacy and capacity-building skills development was conducted by HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) at the Colombo Divisional Secretariat auditorium, recently.

The programme, funded by HelpAge International, under the Sponsor a Grandparent (SAG) project, was represented by 70 heads of 30 SCCs in the Colombo, Maligawatta, Mattakkuliya, and Keselwatta Divisional Secretariats. During the session, HelpAge trained the SCC heads on how to maintain their committee record books and registers, cash registers, and inventory books. The programme also strengthened and encouraged SCC heads to improve productivity and efficiency.

HelpAge Programme Manager Chaminda de Silva spoke about elders' rights adopted by the Government through the Elders' Rights Protection Act No. 09 of 2000 and its amendments, as well as the duties and responsibilities of SCC officials towards the members of their committees. HelpAge Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Swarna Ekanayaka said there were approximately 11,905 registered SCCs countrywide. Colombo Divisional Elders Federation President Godwin Hapuaratchchi thanked HelpAge for holding the awareness programme.

HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said HelpAge is to conduct similar workshops in other parts of the country as well.
