Thomians power past Science 37-9 to earn bonus point

S. Thomas’ College powered their way to a massive 37-9 win over Science College in their inter-school rugby league fixture at Mount Lavinia, earning a precious bonus point in the process having led 13-6 at half-time.

There was no doubt the Thomians were the superior side scoring five tries, two of which were converted, in addition to two penalties. Science replied with three penalties in a scrappy affair littered with errors from both sides.

Science scored the early points via a penalty converted by full back Kavindu Cooray who slotted another penalty six minutes later to give them a 6-0 lead.

S. Thomas’ replied with a couple of penalties converted by Sakith Perera to draw level after 17 minutes.

The hosts asserted their authority by breaching the Science defence after an intense onslaught as lock forward Haritha Senanayake touched down for their first try on the stroke of half-time with Perera adding the extra points to give them a 13-6 lead.

Soon after resumption, Science closed the gap 9-13 when Cooray was spot on with his third penalty conversion.

However, the Thomians hit back with an unconverted try by hooker Lashandra Silva after receiving a superb pass from winger Perera in the 45th minute.

The rampaging Thomians consolidated by rolling over the line twice in quick succession through loose forwards Revanka Abeywardene and Aaquib Cader with Sakith Perera converted both tries to secure the bonus point.

Revanka Tissera added the icing to their victory in the final minute of the game.
