Held for drug possession

Four suspects were arrested with over 16 grams of heroin during island-wide raids conducted by Ambalangoda Police, Mt. Lavinia Police, Kekirawa Police, and the Colombo Crimes Division, respectively.

The suspects taken into custody are between the ages of 29 and 46. They are residents of Kahawa, Mt. Lavinia, Kandy, and Colombo 12.

They were produced at the Balapitiya, Mt. Lavinia, Kekirawa, and Aluthkade Magistrate Courts respectively.

Investigations are continuing.

 


Arrested with cannabis

Four persons have been arrested with 6.45 kilograms of Kerala cannabis near the Mihintale Police Station.

The arrests were made when the suspects were transporting the drugs by van.

The suspects are between the ages of 20 and 35. They are residents of Matale, Galewela, and Madampe.

The suspects were produced at the Anuradhapura Magistrate's Court. Mihintale Police are investigating.

 


Indian national arrested without visa

Seeduwa Police, acting on a tip-off, took into custody an Indian national without a visa from Mulakalangamuwa, recently.

The 28-year-old suspect was produced at the Negombo Magistrate's Court, yesterday. Seeduwa Police are investigating.

 


One dead in road accident

A pedestrian has been mowed down by a motorcycle in Koggala, Habaraduwa.

He had succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Kalugala Hospital.

The deceased was identified as Tikiri Hennadige Somapala, a 70-year-old resident of Habaraduwa. The body is at the Karapitiya Hospital.

The motorcyclist was arrested. Habaraduwa Police are continuing investigations.

Meanwhile, a man was killed when his motorcycle collided into a defender jeep in Ramanadapuram, Dharmapuram.

The victim was identified as Maheshwaran Wijinujan, a 24-year-old resident of Wattakachchhi.

The jeep driver was arrested. He was produced at the Kilinochchi Magistrate's Court, yesterday.

Dharmapuram Police are investigating.

 


Fire at coir factory

A fire which broke out at a coir factory in the Kanamediara Industrial Zone on Wednesday was brought under control by the Tangalle Fire Brigade.

Embilipitiya Police, army personnel, factory workers, and residents also helped douse the fire.

No casualties were reported and none were injured.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Investigations are continuing.


University student stabbed

A student of the Kelaniya University has been stabbed by a youth in Kiribathgoda.

The victim was admitted to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital for treatment. She is 21 years old.

The suspect, aged 22, was arrested by Kiribathgoda Police. He was produced before the Mahara Magistrate's Court, yesterday.

Chemicals in tea: suspicious consignment seized

Police Special Task Force officers in Horana, acting on a tip-off, seized a 178.4-gram consignment of tea leaves believed to be mixed with chemicals from a tea factory in Mahagama.

Several samples of the seized tea have been submitted to the Tea Board for inspection and the remaining tea has been handed over to the Bulathsinhala Police for further investigations.
