‘Education system needs change to meet job market’

Sri Lanka’s education system needs a total overhaul to cater to the requirements of the job market, Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Executive Director Centre for Policy Alternatives, told a seminar recently

“What kind of country do we want?” questioned Saravanamuttu speaking at Hatch on June 12 on the topic ‘What is the Vision for Sri Lanka?’ The event was organized by the Night Watchman society and Advocata.

Saravanamuttu said “We have according to the private sector 500,000 jobs available. But they cannot be filled largely because the unemployed don’t have the skills that are required. We have twice that amount in three wheel drivers and a substantial proportion (of them) are university graduates. We have to completely change our educational system.”

“We have according to government numbers 25,000 illegal migrant labour in this country and they are working in paddy fields. Not all of them but a fair amount. (It is because) no farmer’s child wants to be a farmer.”
