Promotion campaign to woo Indian tourists

The Hotel Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) and the national carrier SriLankan Airlines launched a special promotional campaign on Wednesday to attract Indian tourists. This is the first promotional campaign launched after the Easter Sunday attack.

“Indian tourism market is a major component which assisted in the development of the Sri Lankan tourism industry and right now we are concentrating more on the Indian market than any other market,” said Minister of Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs, John Amaratunga. He said that this tour package is very important mainly because India is our neighbour, the strongest country in the South Asian region and also a country with a higher population.

Sri Lanka needs to do more in attracting Indians especially accounting for the fact that there are many things to offer in this country in terms of culinary and religious heritages which has a close connection with India and the wild life.

“When the temperature rises in the Northern part or Southern part of India, Indians have no other better place to go to other than Sri Lanka,” he said.

He added that at a situation like this when a revival of the industry is needed, tour packages are vital and they hope to launch this package to other markets such as China and Middle East soon.

“We are also planning to restart the ferry service from Rameshwaram to Talaimannar in the future and discussions are in progress with the Indian authorities,” the Minister added.
