CJ ‘OK’s indictments in Rs. 20 Mn bribery case

Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya PC has approved the filing of indictments against President’s former Chief of Staff Kusumdasa Mahanama and former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman P. Dissanayaka before the Permanent High Court trial-at-bar.

This is for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs.540 million and accepting Rs.20 million from an Indian investor who wanted to acquire part of the Kantale sugar factory.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC) had sought the Chief Justice’s approval to file indictments against the accused in the Permanent High Court trial-at- bar.

The two accused had been arrested in a car park of a Colombo luxury hotel, on May 3, 2018, by Bribery Commission officers while accepting a bribe of Rs. 20 million.
