Kanjipani Imran held under PTA for three months

Drug kingpin and gangster Mohamed Najim Mohamed Imran alias ‘Kanjipani Imran’ and two others were yesterday produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjana de Silva for observation purposes.

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) had obtained a detention order from the Defence Secretary for a period of three months under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The other two suspects were identified as Mohammed Badurdeen and Mohammed Azmi.

Meanwhile, there are more than 27 cases in several courts against the suspect Kanjipani Imran.

According to Police, Kanjipani Imran is wanted in connection with three murders, 15 attempted murders and illegal drug smuggling charges.

Kanjipani Imran and two others were arrested on March 28 by local law enforcement officers when attempting to board a flight to the Maldives on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport from Dubai on flight LZ 547 after UAE authorities deported him and three others.

They were arrested along with drug lord Makandure Madush on February 5 by Dubai law enforcement officers.

The CCD reported to court that they had obtained clearance from the Defence Secretary to hold the suspect for three months to question him under the PTA. The CCD is conducting further investigations.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate yesterday ordered the CCD to produce Kanjipani Imran before courts on June 26 for further observation.

The Magistrate also ordered Mohammed Badurdeen and Mohammed Azmi to be produced before court on July 7.
