“National Digital Roadmap” towards Smart Sri Lanka launched

The “National Digital Roadmap,” a roadmap of digital journey towards Smart Sri Lanka was launched at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday.

With the launch of the roadmap, under the theme “Limitless You” covers operational activities of 16 fields including Governance, Security, Transportation, Mobility, Health, Communication, Education and many more.

The National Digital Roadmap, which was launched to increase the limitless capabilities of three sectors,such as, Employees, Customers and Citizens, will pave the way for Smart Sri Lanka as the final outcome.

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) Group Chairman Kumarasinghe Sirisena addressing the gathering said that the National Digital Roadmap will take advantage of the country’s geo placement.

“Sri Lanka is poised to become a global hub for industry, logistics tourism, digital services and research which will bring in more experience and economic gain to the country,” he added.

He further said that Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has invested Rs.150 billion to acquire the latest technology and its advancements and for infrastructure developments, including the laying of a fibre optics cable network within the country and to other regions of the world. As a result of these investments, 5G technology will be introduced for the first time to the country in line with the launch of the roadmap. Besides, the entire country will be covered by 4G technology utilising the fibre optic network. Under the smart governance concept, government institutions will be linked to a network aiming at streamlining the governance and improve productivity.

Under the smart education sector, 2,500 out of 10,000 schools have been linked to the education network while a considerable number of state institutions have already been linked to the network.

“Many projects are to be introduced to streamline the transportation system under the Smart Transportation programme,” the SLT Chairman said.
