Bribery suspect further remanded

A man who allegedly tried to bribe the Horowpathana Police OIC to obtain release of a detained National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ) cadre, was yesterday further remanded till June 18 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne.

The Bribery Commission informed court that the suspect was arrested while offering a bribe of Rs. 250,000 to the Officer in Charge of the Horowpathana Police in his office. The Bribery Commission also stated that the suspect had promised to pay the OIC a total of Rs. 500,000 if he released the suspect without filing a court case.

The suspect was identified as a resident of Horowpathana. The Bribery Commission further stated that the Police Criminal Investigations Department is carrying out a separate investigation regarding the suspect.

The Magistrate instructed the Bribery Commission to expedite investigations regarding the incident.
