Kiriella will make a good President - Ven.Thera

The social service rendered by Minister Lakshman Kiriella is a clear indication that he would be an excellent Presidential candidate, said the Viharadhipathi of the Hanthana Sandagiri Maha Seya Ven. Gangasiripura Dammaloka Thera, who delivered the Anusasana at the foundation stone laying ceremony at the Pussellawa, Ibbanwewa Sri Sudharmarama Temple Dharmasalawa on Sunday.

He said that Kiriella had performed a yeoman service in the Kandy district and the Buddha Sasana and that he would make an excellent President.

“Kiriella has done immense service to the Buddha Sasana and we have learnt that his name has been suggested as the UNP candidate for presidency. If he is nominated, we are certain he will render a great service to Buddhism and to protect our Kandyan heritage,” said Ven. Gangasiripura Dammaloka Thera

A group of United National Party (UNP) members are promoting Public Enterprise Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella, as the Presidential candidate of the party which is supported by Buddhist clergy in Kandy. Kiriella, who addressed the gathering during the ceremony said it is the responsibility of Sri Lankans to protect our temples. “Despite the Europeans ruling our country for over 400 years, Buddhism was not destroyed. Today, some are fearful that Buddhism would be destroyed. If Buddhism could withstand the European rule, how can it be destroyed now?” he questioned.

“Recently, there was a fast unto death demanding the resignation of Muslim leaders. According to Buddhism it is a sin to harm one’s life. Buddhism is a moderate philosophy. Even the Buddha has preached against extremism. However, we must commend the actions of the three Maha Nayakes’ of the Malwathu Chapter who had requested the ministers who resigned to take back their posts. By that they have shown the world that Buddhism is a moderate religion. We don’t need extremism in this country. The Mahanayakes’ saved our country’s dignity by standing up against extremists,” he said.
