Monsoon brings stormy weather

Heavy showers and windy conditions are expected to strengthen further today with the South-West monsoon gradually being established over the island, the Meteorology Department said.

Accordingly, heavy rainfall can be expected, especially in the Kaluthara, Rathnapura, Galle, Matara, Gampaha and Kegalle Districts. Fairly heavy showers can also be expected in some places in the North-Western province.

Fairly strong, gusty, winds are also likely over the country, particularly on the western slopes of the central hills and the Northern, North-Central and Uva provinces and, in the Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Batticaloa and Puttalam districts. Strong winds are also likely over the Jaffna district and the Pottuvil area.

Meanwhile, the sea area off the coast, extending from Trincomalee to Mannar via Kankesanthurai and, the sea area off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambanthota can be rough. The other sea areas around the island can be ‘fairly rough’, the Met. Department said.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.Heavy showers can be expected at some places in the South-western and Southern sea areas.

There is a possibility that near-shore sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle may experience surges due to the effect of small waves.
