Rs. 5 bn paid to SAITM Hospital without approval - GMOA

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has sent a letter to the Auditor General with regard to funds paid to the Dr. Neville Fernando Hospital which is still a private hospital. GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said funds are still being paid to this private hospital.

Dr. Aluthge said the Health Ministry has already paid over Rs. five billion to this hospital without the approval of Parliament which is a serious offence. Ministry officials had done this under the instructions of the current Health Minister, he said.

Dr. Aluthge said the Health Minister has mislead the Government and country by stating that this private hospital was taken over by the Government through an agreement signed between the Government and owner Dr. Neville Fernando and a state bank. But later, the owner advertised in newspapers that his hospital is for sale.
