Anuradhapura to illuminate for Poson

Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayaka said the forthcoming National Poson Festival will be held as arranged and a discussion was held in this regard successfully in Anuradhapura last week.

The Maha Sangha headed by Ruwanwelichetiyaramadhipathi Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thera attended the discussion. Heads of the departments and representatives of the non-governmental organisations and security officers participated in the discussion.

The National Poson Festival will be held this time on the theme ‘Methdiyen Sith Niwamu’ as proposed by Ven. HemarathanaThera.

The festival will be held from June 13 to 18. At 3.00 pm on June 12, the traditional procession carrying water of Tissa Wewa will proceed from the Isurumuniya Rajamaha Vihara to the special Pirith Mandapaya close to the Bomaluwa Temple in Mahameunawa before the commencement of the week-long pirith chanting ceremony.

Meat stalls and liquor shops will be kept closed from June 13 to 19 in the area. A combined security plan will be in effect in Anuradhapura Mihintale and Thanthirimale with 8,000 Police, Army, Navy, Air Force and Civil Security personnel.

Wanninayaka said drinking water, electricity, sanitation, and other amenities are provided for about one million devotees expected to visit Anuradhapura and other sacred zones during the festive season.

He said the tanks in Anuradhapura hold adequate water provided by Malwathu Oya and Yodha Ela and life saving units will be deployed at the major reservoirs for the safety of the pilgrims.

Wanninayaka requests the devotees to clad in white and refrain from having liquor or drugs in sacred areas.
