Three suspects arrested with telecommunication equipment

Three suspects including a Chinese national were arrested yesterday morning by the Special Task Force in a raid at a house in Eththukala, Negombo with telecommunication equipment, including 17,400 SIM cards, over 400 iPhones and around 60 internet routers.

Special Task Force Commandant Senior DIG M.R. Latiff said the raid was carried out on a tip-off the police received. The search operations were conducted on Thursday (6) and Friday morning at 3.00 am and the suspects were arrested with the equipment.

According to the information received, the suspects were engaged in various illegal activities. The STF personnel found 402 mobiles phones, (which were in operation) at the time of the raid, 17,400 phone SIM cards belonging to various service providers, around 60 routers and other telecommunication equipment.

The two suspects were from Negombo and Kalpitiya. The Chinese national has been staying in the country without a valid visa. The suspects were engaged in a telecommunication racket, using the equipment to maintain operations without a licence.

Police are investigating and officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and Sri Lanka Telecom are assisting the investigations.
