SLAPC herbal lands encroached

Ayurveda Department officials have been directed by Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to obtain herbs that the Department needs from the Sri Lanka Ayurveda Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SLAPC). But many of the herbs gardens of the Corporation were now taken by encroachers, sources said.

A spokesman of the Ayurveda Department said the corporation owns five herbal plantations. Of them, only 56 acres have been cultivated, while 944 acres remain uncultivated. Encroachers have taken several acres to set up houses. He said herbal gardens are in Medawachchiya (100 acres) Padaviya (25 acres) Ambanpola (50 acres) Nikaweratiya (54 acres) and 513 acres in the Wellawaya Rossbery Estate. Only the Padaviya, Nikaweratiya and Medawachchiya herbal gardens have been cultivated and the Civil Security Department maintains the Padaviya herbal plantation.

The corporation has taken legal action against the encroachers. Once the lands are taken to the corporation, over 1,000 acres will be cultivated with herbs, he said.
