Court temporarily lifts Ven. Gnanasara Thera’s travel ban, charges amended

Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjana de Silva yesterday temporarily lifted the travel ban imposed on Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera until August 23. Ven. Gnanasara Thera was accused of allegedly obstructing the duties of two Police Narcotics officers within the Welikada Police Division.

Counsel appearing on behalf of the Thera informed court that his client Ven.Gnanasara Thera had received a scholarship in Japan last year and that the scholarship is effective till 2022.

The Counsel also informed that his client wanted to visit Japan to participate in the scholarship related activities and therefore pleaded the lifting of the overseas travel ban imposed on the Thera for a period as long as possible.

The Organized Crimes Prevention Division yesterday informed court that they have amended the charges against the Thera following the instructions given by the Attorney General.

The Counsel stated that his client was not pleading guilty over the charge filed against Venerable Gnanasara Thera.

After taken into consideration, the Magistrate fixed the case for trial.


Gnanasara Thero allowed to go abroad [Time 12.58]

Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero whose passport was impounded in connection with obstructing police officers from exercising their duties, was today temporally permitted to travel abroad by the Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana de Silva.
