Hizbullah faces contempt petition in SC

Controversial Eastern Province ex-Governor M.L.A.M.Hizbullah now faces a contempt of court action filed in the Supreme Court over alleged statements he has made in a TV talk show last month.

A contempt of court application was filed in the Supreme Court yesterday by Attorney-at-law Indrasiri Senarathne through counsel Upul Dissanayake claiming that Hizbullah had made statements on this talk show that were damaging and harmful to the judiciary.

The petitioner stated that when the petitioner was watching a TV programme on May 13, 2019 named ‘Talk with Chathura’ on Derana TV channel, the former Governor made a speech referring to the judiciary and its integrity and independence. The petitioner stated that the statement made by the respondent was about the transfer of a judge at the will of the respondent and obtaining of judgments favourable to the respondent.

The petitioner claims that the ex-Governor’s statements on TV were extremely damaging and harmful to the judicial system of the country.

The petitioner is urging steps be taken against Hizbullah as per Article 105(3) of the Constitution for offences of contempt of Court by several speeches made by him on several occasions.

The petitioner is urging the Supreme Court to punish the respondent for the offence of contempt of court under Article 105 (3) of the constitution.
