Recent terrorist acts created a crisis situation in the country. Terrorism should be condemned and any person, group or organisation aiding and abetting terrorism should be severely dealt with and punished under the existing laws. Ministers and parliamentarians should act intelligently and combat terrorism, Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said.

She was addressing the gathering at a tree-planting ceremony held at the Colombo Viharamahadevi Park on Tuesday to mark World Environment Day which fell on June 5. Mayor Senanayake planted a Kumbuk sapling at the invitation of Colombo Municipal Council Environment Director Dhammika Jayawardena.

She said the verdant Colombo city which she witnessed during her young days has now been transformed into a concrete jungle. The Municipal Council has planned to restore the city’s previous glory by launching a tree planting campaign to plant 10,000 saplings with the assistance of several private sector institutions and organisations.

“If we sow the seeds of enmity and hatred, its repercussions would affect future generations. No injustice would be caused to any community or religion if we act with love and compassion towards all,” the Mayor said.

Acting Municipal Commissioner Engineer Lalith Wickramaratne also spoke. Municipal Council members Seetha Malini, Wehelle Sumithralatha, H. A. R. D. Priyangika, U. Sandemali, Thamara Dayani Perera, Gayathri Wickramasinghe, Henry K. Gamage, Alfred Sampath, Mohamed Sameer Sahabdeen and the heads of Municipal departments were also present on the occasion.
