New prelate for Siam Sect

The newly-appointed prelate for the Colombo Nawa Koralaya and Nawa Thotamuna of Uva Chapter of Siam Sect, Ven. Thumbowila Dhammarathana Thera, was offered the sannaspathra by President Maithripala Sirisena at a ceremony held at the BMICH yesterday.

Fifty-three years ago, on February 17, 1966, he was born to K. D. Jayawardena and Matarage Chandra Piyaseeli who were residing in Thumbowila, Piliyandala. He had his basic education at village school and later studied at the Piliyandala Central College. In 1983, he was ordained by the name of Thumbawila Dhammarathana under the tutelage of Ven. Padawigampola Gunananda Nayaka Thera and Ambewela Pannasara Mahanayaka Thera. He received his higher ordination at the Uposathagaraya of Sri Subadraramaya in Keppetipola in 1987.

After completing education at the Vidyalankara Pirivena, Peliyagoda under the guidance of Most Ven. Prof. Yakkaduwe Sri Pragnarama Nayaka Thera, Ven. Dhammarathana Thera entered the National Teachers’ Training College, Nittambuwa to become a teacher. Then, he entered the Colombo University and obtained a Diploma in Education.

The Thera began his career as a teacher at the Boralesgamuwa Maha Vidyalaya and also taught at Piliyandala Central College, Royal College, Colombo and Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya.

After becoming the incumbent of the Sri Saddarmaramaya, Thumbowila, Piliyandala and Banagetenna Purana Viharaya at Mawanella, the Ven. Thera developed both temples with new constructions and moral values.

Ven. Thumbowila Dhammarathana Thera was meritorious to be a prominent custodian of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
