Sri Lanka has brought terrorism under control - PM

Fanning the flames of racism can be considered as supporting the Islamic State to raise its head again in Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

Highlighting the consequences of the Black July, he said everyone should get together to eradicate ISIS terrorism from the country.

The Prime Minister was addressing the sixth Postgraduate Convocation of the School of Postgraduate studies of SLIDA held at the BMICH last evening.

“ISIS terrorism comes in different shades. Communalism can cause to make its threat worse. Therefore, we should not allow it to happen,” he said.

He said Sri Lanka is among the few countries which brought terrorism under control within a short period of time and it is a world record.

“But, the media has failed to give due recognitiona and show appreciation to the Intelligence Units and Police. Even foreign countries like US, UK and Australia appreciated the achievement,” the Prime Minister pointed out.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also pointed out that the country is now having its first Cabinet of Ministers which has no Muslim representation in the post-independence period. But, is it not a conducive situation in the country.

“Muslims were with us during the three-decade long war. Pushing them towards terrorism using racism makes the process of eliminating the ISIS terrorism harder,” the Prime Minister said.

“A three-member committee to receive complaints against the political representatives who are alleged to have being involved in the recent terror attacks have now been set up by the CID and anyone can present their complaints to this committee,” the Prime Minister further said.

This committee will present its final report to the Parliament after one month and legal action will be taken against the wrongdoers based on this report, he added.
