Sharp drop in A’pura kidney patient numbers

Recent reports show that there has been a sharp drop in the number of kidney patients in the Anuradhapura District.

Dr. Chamika Dilhani of the Anuradhapura Kidney Disease-Prevention Unit said that there were 8,731 kidney patients receiving treatment in Anuradhapura

He was speaking at a meeting of the Anuradhapura District Agriculture Committee which was held on May 25.

A report issued by the North Central Provincial Health Department stated that the number of kidney patients reported from the district during the beginning of the year stood at 10,016, indicating a 1,185 drop in patient numbers.

A North Central Provincial Health Department spokesman said that there has been a gradual decline in kidney patient numbers between 2016 and 2018 in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts.

Meanwhile, provincial healthcare authorities have urged the Health Ministry to provide an adequate number of dialysis machines to treat patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu).

At present, dialysis machines are available only at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, Medawachchiya Divisional Hospital, Padaviya Base Hospital, Medirigiriya Base Hospital, Hingurakgoda District Hospital, and the Polonnaruwa General Hospital. The number of CKDu patients receiving dialysis treatment in the North-Central Province is 583.
