Over 2,280 suspects arrested since Easter Sunday terror attacks

The Police have so far arrested 2,289 suspects in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attacks on April 21 and incidents following that, said Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara. Among those who were arrested are 330 Sinhalese, 139 Tamils and 1820 Muslims.

He said, so far 423 of these suspects have been produced in court and remanded. Among them are 52 Sinhalese, 13 Tamils and 358 Muslim suspects.

Of the total number of suspects arrested, 211 suspects are being held at the respective Police stations on detention orders for interrogation. Among them are 68 suspects who are being detained by the CID and 26 held by the TID. Among them are 09 Sinhalese suspects, one Tamil and 201 Muslims.

“Among those produced in courts, 1,655 have been released on bail. They comprise of 269 Sinhalese, 125 Tamils and 1,261 Muslims,” the Police Spokesman said.

The suspects arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act stands at 575, according to SP Gunasekara. Among them are 25 Sinhalese, 13 Tamils and 537 Muslims. Further, 213 were arrested under the Emergency regulations with 66 Sinhalese, six Tamils and 141 Muslims included in this figure. Those arrested under the ICCPR stands at 72 with 75 Sinhalese, a Tamil and 26 Muslims among those arrested. Those arrested under the Penal Code stands at 1,429 and among them are 188 Sinhalese, 120 Tamils and 1,121 Muslims with regard to the April 21 attacks, investigations and search operations, including those arrested over the clashes in the Wayamba Province.
