‘Corruption continues in drug purchasing’

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) informed President Maithripala Sirisena about the trade union action they would take in connection with Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne’s influence on doctors’ transfers, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Speaking at a press conference held at the GMOA Headquarters in Colombo last Sunday evening, he said that Health Ministry officials who support the Health Minister’s political projects, and who give in to them due to pressure, support the destruction of the health administration, especially the transfers of doctors.

Dr. Aluthge said corruption and malpractices connected to cancer drug purchasing were still continuing uninterrupted, adding that the Government Auditor’s Report also said the same.

According to Dr. Aluthge, the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) always gave decisions favouring a specific private company in order to minimise the competition.

It also imported drugs while ignoring the minimum prices. One specific company has been allowed to gain large profits by the SPC ignoring all relevant rules and procedures, he added.
