Model village for families of Zion Church victims

The Housing and Cultural Affairs Ministry will build a special model village in Manmunai North to accommodate 22 families affected by the Batticaloa Zion Church terrorist bomb blast on April 21, which killed 26 of their family members.

“The total cost of the model village will be borne by the Housing Ministry,” Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa said.

The Minister gave this assurance when he visited Zion Church in Batticaloa on an inspection tour on Saturday to see the destruction caused by the bomb blast. The Minister who met the affected families and conveyed his sympathies to them discussed their immediate problems as well.

The Minister also discussed measures to rebuild the damaged church. Minister Premadasa who said the value of the lives lost in the blast could not be assessed in monetary terms said he could understand the anguish in the minds of those who lost their family members since he personally underwent such agony when he lost his father at the hands of a suicide bomber. He said therefore they would come forward to assist the grieving families without being hamstrung by AR and FR rules.

He said the Urban Condominium Development Authority would implement five special social livelihood development programmes for the benefit of the affected families while the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) would also handle one such programme.

The five programmes handled by the Urban Condominium Authority would be titled, ‘Praja Saviya’, ‘Detha Saviya’, ‘Nipuna Saviya’, ‘Deya Saviya’ and ‘Diriya Saviya’.

The NHDA programme would be titled ‘Diriya Niwasa’.

The discussion also centred on reconstruction work of Zion Church costing Rs. 43 million.
