Zaharan was one of Shangri-La Hotel suicide bombers, DNA tests reveal

The Criminal Investigation Department(CID) yesterday informed Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake that a DNA test carried out by Government Analyst has confirmed that National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) leader Zaharan Hashim was one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up at the Shangri-La Hotel on Easter Sunday.

On a previous date,the CID stated that the two suicide bombers, who blew themselves at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, had rented more than seven houses in several areas of the country.The CID further stated that two suicide bombers had rented those houses at Lucky Plaza in Kollupitiya, Mahawila, Kochchikade, Badalgama etc. The suicide bombers had rented out seven vehicles for their use. The seven vehicles were sent to the Government Analyst to verify whether they were used to transport explosives.

According to the Government Analyst’s report, it is confirmed that suicide bombers had not utilised these vehicles to transport any explosives, the CID informed court. The CID stated that the daughter and the wife of NTJ Leader Zahran Hasheem were detained under CID custody.

According to the report submitted by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, the value of the gems and jewellery is estimated at over Rs.47 million. The CID pleaded to issue an order directing the Central Bank Governor to confiscate the jewellery and gems in a safety locker.

The CID informed that they had recovered several productions from the Lucky Plaza residence in Kollupitiya. According to the report submitted by registrar of finger prints, that the fingerprints of the daughter and wife of NTJ leader Zahran Hasheem tallied with the productions found from the Lucky Plaza apartment in Kollipitiya.

The CID also stated that they will take necessary steps to obtain the CCTV footage of the Shangri-La Hotel with the assistance of the Shangri-La Hotel General Manager, Specialists from Spore Technology and officials from Government Analyst’s Department. The CID also stated that they will take necessary steps to confiscate the gems and jewellery.

The CID also stated that they recovered a Quran from the Lucky Plaza apartment in Kollupitiya. The CID pleaded to issue an order directing the registrar of the Finger print to submit a report regarding the Quran.

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for June 12.
