Suspect cop killer dies in Police shootout

The suspect wanted in connection with the killing of a Police officer attached to the Akuressa Police during an illicit liquor raid on May 22 died in a Police shootout at Urumutta jungle last morning.

Akuressa Police on a tip-off received had launched a special raid to arrest the suspect who had been hiding in the jungle evading arrest.

The suspect was injured in a subsequent shootout with the Police at around 2.50 a.m., Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

“The 56-year-old suspect identified as Lokuge Dharmasiri alias Banda died on admission to the Akuressa hospital,” he said.

“It was also revealed that the gun used by the suspect is a locally made which was also seized by the Police,” Gunasekara said. Further investigations are being conducted.

Meanwhile, the Police Constable Kasun Sampath who was killed in the previous shooting has been promoted as a Police Sergeant by the Police Headquarters.
