Meanwhile, informed sources said that a proposal has been made to replace Azath Salley with Felix Perera as the Western Province Governor. However, it is learnt that several senior politicians close to the President had objected to the move, stating that the Western Province Governor’s post had been traditionally held by a member of the minority communities. They have objected to replacing Salley with a person from the majority community.

Former Chief Justice Suppiah Sharvananda was appointed the first Governor of the Western Province in 1988 and he was succeeded by D.M. Swaminathan (a former Cabinet Minister), K. Vignarajah, Pathmanathan Ramanathan, Alavi Moulana, K.C. Logeswaran and Hemakumara Nanayakkara.
