BIA cleaning staff nabbed for ‘smuggling’ gold

A woman aged 55 attached to a cleaning service at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was apprehended and handed over to Sri Lanka Customs by Airport and Aviation Services (AASL) security while attempting to smuggle gold jewellery weighing 2.187kg valued at Rs.11.5 million, into Sri Lanka.

According to the preliminary investigations, a transit passenger had handed over the parcel containing gold jewellery to the janitor.

Further investigations into the case are being conducted by Custom officers under the guidance of Additional Director General of Customs Saman Ranawana and other officials.
