‘Accidents at railway crossings, a major issue’

Transport and Civil Aviation State Minister Ashok Abeysinghe said accidents at railway crossings incur major losses to the government since they disrupt train operations, destroy goods and equipment.

He said that above all railway level crossings accidents kill and maim a large number of people annually.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the newly installed bells and signal networks at the Gorokgasdeniya, Yaththalgoda and Alawwa Railway Crossings on the main railway line.

The State Minister said signal net works will be installed at every unprotected railway crossing in a few years.

“Thirty five unprotected railway crossings in Kurunegala will get signal networks before long. All these signal networks were set up by engineers of the Railway Department. The equipment cost only Rs. 3 m each.

If they were imported, one network would have cost Rs.8 m. I will modernize the Alawwa, Polgahawela, Maho and Kurunegala Railway Stations with flyovers and bring them to the international level,” the State Minister said.
