Eight thousand teacher trainees to be recruited

The Education Ministry is to recruit around 8,000 teacher trainees to 19 state schools, this year, Senior Kurunegala Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said.

Qualified candidates [those who have passed their G.C.E. (A.L.) examinations between 2016 and 2017], would be selected for 27 teacher-training diploma courses at the respective state schools to which they would be appointed to, he added.

Balasooriya was speaking at a meeting of school heads held at the Bingiriya Youth Training Centre in Kurunegala, yesterday.

The education director said that interviews for candidates willing to follow the three-year courses would be held at the Education Ministry during the third week of June.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena has declared June 22 to July 1 as the National Drug Prevention Week, he said, adding that President's Secretary Udaya R. Seneviratne had told all provincial education directors to raise awareness on drugs among schoolchildren.

Schoolchildren and their parents should be motivated to inform the authorities about errant distillers, as well as drug dealers, Balasooriya said.

Around 2,456 schoolchildren addicted to drugs were rehabilitated last year, he added.
