‘Groundnut, green gram imports to stop’

The Agriculture Ministry is to discontinue the importation of groundnuts and green gram from next year on, Agriculture Minister P. Harrison said.

He said that the decision was taken due to an adequate supply of corn and peanuts in the country, as well as to encourage local farmers.

Minister Harrison added that his ministry had taken measures to cultivate green gram in 15,000 acres of land in the Hambantota District.

“Last year, around 10,000 metric tonnes of green gram had been imported to Sri Lanka; but with the implementation of this project, there won’t be a reason to import green gram to the country anymore,” he added.
