No final decision by SLFP on NCM

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has not taken a final decision on the No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen brought by the Joint Opposition, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera MP said yesterday.

He was addressing the media yesterday at the SLFP headquarters, Colombo along with Parliamentarian Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

When asked whether the SLFP has taken a final decision to vote in favour of the No-Confidence Motion, he said that a final decision has not been taken as yet. Asked why the SLFP is reluctant to take the chance of changing the government by voting in favour of the No-Confidence Motion, he said that the country’s agenda should be given priority before personal agendas. Then, prior to a change of government, attention should be drawn to make the necessary changes relating to the civil law aiming to create a common law for all.

With a view to create a common law and regulation for the entire country, the SLFP has forwarded a set of proposals to Parliament. The proposals have been forwarded to the Sectoral Oversight Committee, which is scheduled to be summoned by next Friday for its consideration, Parliamentarian Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.

Jayasekera also said, the SLFP never wants to get political gains by destabilising the country..

The SLFP needs not to destabilise the country for silly political gains and therefore such attempts cannot be accepted, he added while speaking on a few recent clashes that erupted in several areas following the Easter Sunday suicide terror attacks.

“A stabilised country is needed to do politics,” he added.

He further said that the behaviour of social media has helped create unrest, which resulted in clashes. He highlighted the need of taking stern action against unruly persons who create unrest by publishing false and baseless rumours through social media.

He said that the tourism industry, which was harmed by the suicide attacks can be regained utilising proper mechanism, including highlighting the security measures taken towards the protection of tourists.

The General Secretary said that the security of the country has been strengthened and it can be seen as a tremendous progress. All persons, who were directly involved with the suicide attacks have been taken into custody by now while the others who indirectly assisted the attackers are being taken into custody by now.
