Navy commemorates fallen war heroes

Marking National War Heroes’ Day, a commemoration ceremony presided by Navy Commander Vice-Admiral Piyal De Silva was held at the War Hero Monument in Welisara, yesterday morning.

During the ceremony, the navy commander placed floral tributes at the monument and observed a two-minute silence in recognition of the sacrifices the country’s war heroes have made for the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the motherland.

Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Deputy Chief of Staff and Operations Director-General Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle, other director-generals, senior officers from the Naval Headquarters, as well as officers from the Western Naval Command, were also present at the event. Furthermore, another commemoration ceremony for naval officers was held in the East, under the patronage of Eastern Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe.

War heroes were also commemorated at the Mailapitiya War Memorial with the participation of officers from the tri-forces, police, Civil Defence Force, and family members of war heroes.
