Three died and six others were injured in a lorry-van collision on the Dambulla – Kekirawa road at Madatugama, yesterday afternoon.

Kekirawa Police said that the injured were admitted to the Dambulla Hospital. Police said the van driver, as well as a woman and her daughter who were also travelling in the van, had died in the accident. They were residents of Kawatayamuna in Mahawela, Matale.

The lorry had been plying from Dambulla to Kekirawa and the van was running in the opposite direction at the time the incident took place.

Police suspect that the van driver may have either driven the vehicle recklessly or fallen asleep at the wheel.

A Buddhist monk was also among those injured in the accident and is currently receiving treatment at the Dambulla Hospital. Investigations are continuing.
