Suspect remanded over posting false news

The Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrama ordered to remand a university student, who was arrested for publishing a false post on Facebook stating that the flight en route to China with the President Maithripala Sirisena onboard had crashed, till May 23.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama Weerasinghe, Police informed the court that the suspect was identified as Sanka Pramod Ariyawansha resident of Piliyandala and a student of Sri Jayawardanepura University.

Police pleaded to remand the suspect meanwhile the Counsel appearing for the suspect informed the Court that his client had shared a post which had posted someone else in the facebook.

Counsel also requested the Magistrate to release the suspect on bail in any given condition.

However, considering all the facts the magistrate directed the Court this is the time that citizens have to act mindful and think what they are sharing in public.   

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for May 23.
