Mahason Balakaya leader remanded till May 28

Mahason Balakaya Leader Amith Weerasinghe who was arrested in the Theldeniya area was remanded till May 28 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalini Perera.

He was arrested for allegedly posting content with racial and religious hatred on social media.

The Colombo South Anti Fraud Unit informed the Additional Magistrate that an interview given by the suspect in 2018 to the electronic media had been published after the Easter Sunday attacks through Youtube.

Police stated that the suspect had allegedly expressed opinions and published photographs on social media which hinder religious and national coexistence in the country.

Filing a ‘B’ report before court, the Police also stated that several people had visited his residence. Police further told court that they want to obtain details regarding the people who had visited his residence.

Attorney-at-Law Senaka Hunupitiya appearing on behalf of the suspect informed court that Police security had been provided to the suspect’s residence since April 10.

Counsel Hunupitiya also stated that the security provided to his client had been increased after the Easter Sunday attacks.

Police also stated that they had seized the suspect’s mobile phone and handed it over to the Computer Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department.

The Police also pleaded to issue an order directing the five mobile companies to submit phone call record details related to the suspect’s mobile phone. The Magistrate ordered the Police to expedite the investigation prior to the next calling date.

Counsel also pleaded to issue an order directing the Prisons Authority to provide special security for the suspect inside prison.

The Magistrate instructed the Prisons Authority to provide necessary security for the suspect.
