Establish new Security Council including President, PM and Opposition Leader - Patali

A new Security Council that includes the President, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition should be established to counter the prevailing tense situation in the country, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday said. This Security Council could become the one voice that communicates with the international community on defense and security matters, Ranawaka also said.Minister Ranawaka also pointed out the importance of forming a Council that includes all religious leaders that would address the religious animosities that jeopardize the economic and political stability of the country.

“The political leadership cannot get away from problems by isolating community matters and passing them to ministries such as Buddhist Affairs, Hindu Affairs and Muslim Affairs. This slipping-away-from-problems method cannot be entertained anymore,” Minister Ranawaka pointed out.

Minister Ranawaka made these observations at the inauguration conference of the “The National Path” organized by the People’s Movement for the Development and the Protection of the Nation which was held yesterday at BMICH. The movement forwards a series of proposals for immediate implementation by the government and its institutions responsible for national security, law and order.

Minister Ranawaka also said that they shall make no room for family politics to regain power in the country by using the present crisis situation as a scape goat. He also stresses the importance of the coming Presidential Election that will demand intelligent-voting.

Speaking further Minister Ranawaka said, “The first Islamic terrorist attack took place in November 30, 2018 when two Police Constables were killed. Political opportunists came out and claimed that the LTTE is reawakening. They started circulating certain documents in supportive of this theory. The investigators too followed the same line and arrested some ex-LTTE cadres. But this crime was instigated by the gang led by Zaharan. This terrorist group has had number of training centers around the country. But these imprudent politicos only spoke of the reawakening of the LTTE. There was Mawanella incident, then the attack on Minister Kabir Hashim’s Personal Secretary and the seizing of explosives at Wanathavilluwa, all these incidents were highlighted with political agendas, so we missed the true perpetrators and we could have avoided this terror attack.”

Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera,Ven.Mawarale Baddhiya Thera, Minister Mano Ganesan and former Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Chairman Faiz Mustapha spoke at the event.
