Gazette banning UAVs, drones

President Maithripala Sirisena as the Defence Minister issued a Gazette Extraordinary to prohibit the navigation of any unmanned aircraft (UAV) or any drone over Sri Lanka on Monday.

According to the Gazette, no person other than a member of Tri-Forces or a police officer is allowed to navigate drones or unmanned aircraft over Sri Lanka until further notice. The Gazette has been issued under the provisions of Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in a press statement following the Easter Sunday attacks, announced that all drones and unmanned aircraft are banned within Sri Lankan airspace from April 25. The CAA said the decision was taken considering the prevailing security situation.
