The College of Ophthalmologists in Sri Lanka has agreed to continue cataract surgeries at state hospitals after normal working hours in Government hospitals, Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the Ophthalmologists had agreed to continue surgeries responding to a request made by Health Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne during a recent meeting.

“The new measure will cut down the long waiting list exist in the state sector for cataract surgeries. It is estimated that around 1.2 million patients suffer from some sort of eye issue in Sri Lanka at present. The Health Ministry will provide required eye lenses and funds to carry out cataract surgeries after normal working hours,” the Health Ministry spokesman said.

“All the eye lenses required for patients who obtain treatment from the state hospitals are provided free of charge and they are imported from America. The Health Ministry has already provided over 100,000 eye lenses and it is expected to increase this number to 200,000 by the end of this year,” he added.
