Man arrested for burying arms, ammo in farm

A suspect who tried to bury a consignment of arms and ammunition taken from his Kohuwala Saranankara Mawatha residence in his farm at Kuda Oya, Thanamalwila was arrested by the Kuda Oya Police along with the cache of arms on May 12 night.

The cache included eight firearms including two sniper guns, over 4000 cartridges and several other arms and ammunition.

He had transported the arms and ammunition from his house in a double cab on May 10. After handing over the cache of arms wrapped in a bag to the farm caretaker and asking him to bury it in the farm by cutting a large ditch, he had left for his Kohuwala residence.

The caretaker who felt suspicions about the matter had alerted the Kuda Oya Police which visited the farm on the same night and seized the cache of arms. Thereafter, the Kuda Oya Police had immediately informed the Kohuwala police which visited the Saranankara Mawatha house and arrested the suspect.

The suspect at the time of his arrest had two shot guns in his possession for which he had the licences. Police said the suspect who had been employed in the United States for a long period after gaining American citizenship had later returned to Sri Lanka.

Kuda Oya Police said the suspect is being interrogated to ascertain the purpose for which he had amassed a large cache of arms.

Buried weapon discovered in Wellawaya - (14:31)

The Sri Lanka Army and the Police have found a stock of firearms and ammunition buried in land in Kudaoya,Wellawaya.

Accordingly, 2 Repeater firearms, 2 shotguns, a locally produced pistol, 342 T-65 bullets, 75 MI-16 type ammunition, and 593 bullets, said the Army Media Spokesperson.

The weapons were found based on a tip-off received, it was located near the road towards the Commando Training Camp in Kuda Oya, Uva.
