Galewela PS bans burqa

Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) banned the burqa – a dress of Muslim women - unanimously. The decision was made at its monthly meeting recently at its auditorium.

Sabha Chairman M.P.R.Jayatilaka tabled the motion and Muslim councillors of both parties gave their mandate to impose the ban with immediate effect. Muslim women dressed in Burqa will not be allowed to enter public places and private institutes in the area hereafter. PS councillor S.M. Markeem said at the meeting that Burqa is not a attire of Muslim women. All communities in the country should follow its common laws, he said.

A Muslim extremist group has massacred people on the Easter Sunday killing over 300 and injuring over 500 devotees. “We abhorrently condemn this brutal act,” he said.

“God is above us. He will punish the offenders in time,” he said. The extremists who are responsible for the massacre should be arrested and dealt with severely, the councillor said.
