IESL gives notice on membership registration

The Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka (IESL) has on May 11, given notice to the public that engineers working within Sri Lanka must register at the Engineering Council of Sri Lanka (ECSL) through the IESL.

A registration fee of Rs 1,150 would be applicable for the first year. Under Gazette Notification No. 2122 dated May 3, the IESL and the Institute of Incorporated Engineers of Sri Lanka (IIESL), are given the power to register engineering practitioners. IESL may register chartered, associate and affiliate engineers. The IIESL may register incorporated engineers and engineering diplomats/technicians.

The Engineering Council of Sri Lanka was established in 2017 under an Act. The current ECSL was empowered from August 24, 2018. Under the Act, no engineering practitioner shall engage in the practice of the engineering profession unless such engineering practitioner is registered with the Council. The ECSL formulates and maintains professional standards and conduct of engineering practitioners. The ECSL is tasked with defining and registering the different categories of engineering practitioners.

People currently registered in other professional engineering bodies recognized by the IESL, may be registered through a mechanism currently being formulated by the Professional Standards Management Committee of the IESL.

This mechanism once approved by the Council of the IESL will be communicated publicly.
