R.P.P. Rajapaksha

Efficient Administrator

R.P.P. Rajapaksha, son of K.B. Rajapaksha of Henegama, passed away a few days ago at the age of 92. He spent a very healthy life.

Rajapaksha had his education at Ananda College, Colombo, as well as the University of Peradeniya. He was fortunate to have been able to associate with distinguished personalities such as Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa.

He worked at the Ceylon Administrative Service (CCS) and later retired as the Deputy Commissioner of Co-operative Development. He rendered a yeomen service to develop the co-operative movement in Sri Lanka.

His honest and devoted management skills helped him gain high-esteem in the co-operative department. He received two scholarships in 1960 and 1978 to study at the London University. He was a well-travelled person.

Aggression was never in Rajapaksha’s vocabulary. He showed so much compassion, understanding, love, happiness, and readiness to forgive and forget, always with a beautiful smile. He was courageous and never hesitated to stand up for justice. He lived a dynamic life and always extended his kindness and assistance to his family, relatives, and friends.

He had three sisters and five brothers. One brother, R.P.S. Rajapaksha, is a retired principal of the Henegama Central College; while one sister, Sunethra Rajapaksha, is a retired assistant principal of Visakha Vidyalaya.

Rajapaksha was one of the kindest and most genuine human beings I had ever met; ever calm, honest, humble, and down-to-earth. As his brother-in-law, I will never forget his fine qualities.

After retirement from the co-operative department, Rajapaksha was offered an ILO (UN) appointment as a consultant and served in Bangladesh and Fiji.

May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nirvana.

A.D.T. Maithripala, JP
