SIU probes Wellampitiya police action

OIC says no container loads taken out :

Disciplinary action will be taken against Wellampitiya police officers based on an interim report to be submitted by the Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

This is pertaining to the investigations being carried out on the Wellampitiya police, police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Police Headquarters is investigating whether the nine workers of the copper factory at Wellampitiya were released on bail due to an error made by the Wellampitiya police.

Gunasekara said the SIU had recorded statements from several police officers including the Wellampitiya OIC, CI Gamini Hewawitharana. The others include the acting Director of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) SP Udaya Hemantha and Wellampitiya Crimes OIC, IP Piyal Gunatilake.

The SIU had taken all the documents in the police pertaining to this case into its custody on Wednesday.Wellampitiya OIC CI Gamini Hewawitharana rejected allegations by several area Civil Security Committee members who alleged that some of the goods stored in the copper factory had been taken out in two containers.

He with responsibility stated that none of the goods stored inside the factoryhad been taken out by anyone so far.

The SIU is also conducting an investigation into these allegations, Gunasekara told the Daily News yesterday.
