Probe to be launched on Hizbullah’s son’s alleged Rs.500 mn shares in Sharia University

Defence State Minister Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday stated that an investigation would be initiated as to how Eastern Province Governor M.L.A.M. Hizbullah’s son allegedly owns Rs.500 million shares of the Sharia University in Batticaloa.

He made this observation yesterday when UNP Parliamentarian Hesha Vithanage inquired if the government would initiate an investigation into Hizbulla’s son’s shares in the Sharia University, as it is a donation.

At this stage, Opposition MP Bandula Gunawardena asked Higher Education Minister Rauf Hakeem to make a statement regarding the matter.

Higher Education Minister Rauff Hakeem stated that the process of allowing a private institution to offer a degree programme is still being debated. He added this matter could be discussed and the right decision taken after the situation comes back to normal. When Speaker Karu Jayasuriya queried if State Minister Wijewardene will initiate an inquiry, he said he would. UNP MP Chaminda Wijesiri also said that the matter should be looked into as it is a much debated project in the country.
