MR calls for Special PSC to discuss proposed Counter-Terrorism Bill

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to appoint a Special Parliamentary Select Committee (SPSC) to discuss the proposed Counter-Terrorism Bill.

Rajapaksa said in Parliament yesterday that there are protests against the proposed Bill by almost all sectors of society and his party opposes it. However, he said a wide discussion among all the parties should be initiated to address the concerns of the society about the Counter Terrorism Bill and iron out the areas of concern.

“We are against this proposed Bill. There is no change in that stance. The electoral Oversight Committee has not discussed this at length. Therefore, the best solution is to appoint a Select Committee.”

Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe said in response, “No. We have to discuss about it. You and I can discuss. I will invite you for the meetings. We can take a decision after that.” The Speaker added, “Okay. You can come to a final agreement regarding this after discussing the issue.”
