A car travelling on the Mahiyangana road veered off and fell into the Vienna Canal near the 52nd milepost at Welampele around 4.00 pm on May 7, Mahiyangana Police said.

The driver who was the sole occupant, was rescued.

Police said as the car was swept downstream for about 500 metres, three youths bathing in the river who noticed the accident had swum downstream and held on to the car with great difficulty and rescued the driver with the help of neighbours who rushed to the scene. The car was later recovered from the river.

The driver of the vehicle is a soldier in Beligalla Dambana, who was on home leave. He said the car veered off the road as he tried to avoid a cow which had suddenly strayed into the middle of the road. He lost control due to the high speed of the vehicle. The three brave youths who rescued the vehicle and its driver are E.M. Sandaruwan, T.G. Roshan and Sumith Priyashantha.

They earned plaudits from the police and villagers for their bravery.
