The Supreme Court yesterday issued an Interim Order preventing U.G.L. Anuththara and A.L.M. Maharoof from functioning as Additional Colombo City Coroner until final determination of a Fundamental Rights petition.
This petition had been filed by Colombo City Coroner A. Ashroff Rumy and Additional Colombo City Coroner Iresha Deshani naming Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorala and Justice Ministry Secretary and several others as respondents.
The petitioners stated that it is not only a tradition and practice to appoint only a lawyer as the Colombo City Coroner. It was also recognized by the scheme or recruitment expressly laid down under section 2:9 of the Establishment Code for an appointment to be made as Colombo City Coroner.
The petitioners alleged that neither U.G.L. Anuththara nor A.L.M. Maharoof are Attorneys-At-Law.
