Kanjipani Imran, two others produced in Court

Drug kingpin Mohamed Najim Mohamed Imran alias Kanjipani Imran and two others were yesterday produced before Colombo Chief Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjana de Silva for observation purposes.

The Colombo Crimes Division had obtained a detention order from the Secretary of Defense for a period of three months under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The other two suspects were identified as Mohammed Badurdeen and Mohammed Azmi.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate yesterday ordered the CCD to produce the suspect before courts on Juny 12 for further observation.

The CCD informed the Additional Magistrate that there are more than 27 cases in several courts against the suspect Kanjipani Imran. According to Police, Kanjipani Imran is wanted in connection with three murder charges, 15 attempted murders and illegal drug smuggling charges.

Imren were arrested on March 28 by local law enforcement officers when attempting to board a flight to the Maldives on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport from Dubai on flight LZ 547 after the UAE authorities deported him and three others. They were arrested along with Drug Kingpin Makandure Madhush on February 5 by Dubai law enforcement officers.

The CCD reported to court that they had obtained clearance from the Defence Secretary to hold the suspect for three months to question him under the PTA. The CCD is conducting further investigations.

Attorney-at-Law Lakshman Perera and Attorney-at-Law Harith Hettiarachchi appeared on behalf of the suspects.
